15mm Star Wars: Darth Vader (or: learning the OSL)

I'm still getting a grip on glazing - and still asking myself how I could do without the glazing medium (which I started using only around a week ago). I thought that the Darth Vader mini from the second 'Space Pals' pack will be a nice training piece for both black glazing and Object Source Lighting (which I tried to do with the Obi Wan miniature but with much worse results). Here is the result:

I know that some parts could be done better (the cloak could be cleaner and I don't really like how the left kneepad turned out), but I'm overall quite happy with the result.

  3. Looks great to me! Darker figures work much better with OSL than light colored ones I have found. This guy is the perfect candidate!

  4. Wow... I have only just ordered this figure and already you've NAILED it better than I could hope to. I will consider this as inspiration, then :)

I think I'll (gently, gently) remove the attached base from mine and put it on a tech-deck type base to distinguish it from yours a bit.

  6. Thanks for kind words! @Spacejacker: true, that's why I'm going to slightly convert the Luke miniature from the same pack and go with the Return of the Jedi color scheme for him.

@Allison: Waiting for your version, then :) I too thought about making a different base for Vader, but I wanted him to fit with the rest of the collection...

  8. My 2 sets of these just came in the mail yesterday! Fantastic, I can't wait to paint them... I might start with a different figure though - decisions, decisions...

  12. ^^ I know that feeling, man!... every week :/

Right now I'm actually using these pics as a guide for the OSL on the um, space pals figure I started with, a different one but one who also has a um, glowing sword. So, let's hope you did it correctly ;)

  13. Hey... if you read this... any tips on getting this little bugger's cape to glue on and stay on? I'm having a hard time with it. If you have any advice leave a comment on one of my blog posts, I'll see it. Thanks :)

    1. Not sure if this helps, but I used two bits of ProCreate putty to stabilize the cape: the first one was placed into the hole on his back (to make the connection a bit stronger than if I only used superglue), the second was used to fill the gap between the body and the cape.

    2. Thanks! I did this, and also pinned it with some wire... hopefully it holds.
